Ashura is the king of the country of Shura and loved by all his people. Ashura follows the custom of his country: to battle with the Yasha clan each night for ownership of the castle of the moon. Ashura seems pleased with this repetitive life, but his heart harbors a different wish; one that carries a price to high to pay.

Yasha is the silent yet powerful king of the Yasha tribe. He too is bound by the repetitive fate of his people to fight with the Ashura clan over control of the moon castle.

In one of their travels; Sakura, Syaoran, Fye, and Kurogane fall in the country of Shara where two tribes reside. One; the Yukaku; are guarded by the statue of Ashura. The other; the Jinja are guarded by Yasha. Both tribes are in constant struggle with each other since for as long as they can remember. Once a year when the statues were closest to each other, Yasha's wounded eye would bleed and earthquakes plaque the country. In one particular strong tremor the sky starts to break and the group of travelers end up in the era when the real Ashura and Yasha live.

Sakura and Syaoran end as guest in Ashura's castle and he tells them of the battle for the castle of the moon. That there is a legend that whomever gains control of the castle will have their heart's desire granted. That is why every night the Ashura and Yasha clan fight. Even if overpowered by an already written fate of endless fighting, Ashura and Yasha cannot avoid the feelings that grow between them. Even when they only fight because that is all they know. They are equally matched until Yasha falls ill and ridden by his illness Ashura manages to wound him on his right eye.

After that battle Yasha appears in front of Ashura inside his castle; something that isn't possible if Yasha were alive. It is his spirit that visits Ashura, to bid him goodbye. To Ashura's surprise, Yasha shows up on the battlefield the next day as if nothing had happened, but he immediately knows that what he sees isn't the real Yasha but an illusion cause by one of Sakura's feather's born out of Ashura's wish. After Syaoran and Sakura show up, Ashura decides it's time to end the facade and releases Yasha's spirit from the illusion which was Yasha's wish.

Now that Ashura has gained control of the moon castle and wishes for his heart's desire, but what he really wants has too big a price that not even the castle can grant it and it starts to crumble. Because what Ashura really wants is for Yasha to revive so they can be together. With his wish ungranted Ashura watches the castle crumble, refusing to leave as he holds Yasha's sword to his chest. Even after people call after him to flee, he refuses. If Yasha can't come back to him, then he will go where Yasha is.

The castle disappears from the sky, Ashura's people mourn his loss, it's time for Syaoran and company to return from where they came, but before he leaves Syaoran asks of Ashura's people that if they ever find any remains of the kings to bury them together. After this they return to the same yet different country of Shara where the peopel no longer fight, but live together in harmony and the statues of Ashura and Yasha are forever together.
